As you may have heard, Why? have had to cancel their appearance at Venn due to illness. A real shame...so what now?

The only way to follow a Why? is with a 'Z'. ZUNZUNEGUI are a Bristol-based band from the Blank Tapes stable (Bass Clef, Scatter, Thee, Stranded Horse), who mark a wild, musically lawless and HIGHLY danceable path somewhere between El Guincho and Oxbow. Throw in Konono No. 1 melodic surges, Boredoms-like sonic barrages and Kushal Gaya, a totemic Mauritian frontman who prowls his stage domain like a wounded panther...and, as a witness of their recent roaster of a set with A Hawk & A Hacksaw was moved to declare: 'If you don't like ZunZunEgui, I hate you'. Serve with rum.

A new Venn commission for the legendary vocal improviser, Phil Minton, Century FC is a 'cascading' workshop-based composition process for 100-piece 'Feral Choir', drawing together participants from across the communities of Bristol. As an extension of Phil's longstanding Feral Choir project, the process uses the raw qualities of untrained voices in non-verbal vocal improvisation, working with sounds rather than song. No musical experience is necessary for participation and the process is very much about encouraging wider inclusion in music production and performance by people who might never have considered themselves musical. Phil will train 10 people from diverse community groups in Bristol, teaching extended vocal techniques and improvisation methods. Each participant will then train a further ten people from their respective organisations. These groups will unite to form a 100-strong choir, conducted in live performance by Phil. Century FC at Venn will comprise two separate 20 minute performances at Arnolfini on Sunday, 8 June. Each will be free and open to the public, with tickets available in advance, or on the day (subject to advance interest).

Commission produced in partnership with Arika (the second leg of Century FC will take place in 2009 at Glasgow's Instal Festival, enabled by the generous support of the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, Scottish Arts Council and The PRS Foundation's co-commissioning scheme, with additional support from Bristol City Council's Festivals Fund.

Venn 08 is stoked to be hosting a brand new, brilliantly colourful and imaginative new work from composer, artist and trickster Ergo Phizmiz entitled 'Forest : Part One'. Let Ergo himself explain more:

"'Forest : Part One' is the first of a projected series of multimedia works in which I delve in various contexts into the fear-filled heart-lump of magical Bavarian woodland. In this case, a room sized collage across found-wood-organisations, fragmented folktales from Germany and Eastern-Europe, wooden and metal musical instruments, wolves, discarded Super-8 film, spiders, wine bottles, trolls, and strange birds, replete with performance interventions playing music notated from the shapes of dead twigs. The physical forest constructed in the room will remain still, whilst the sound of the forest grows from two lone jibber-jabberings into a dense foliage of tree-music, abounding with euphoniums, banjoes, harmoniums, and other such beasts of acoustic fury".

See www.ergophizmiz.com for more info on the man described as 'a musical equivalent to Chris Morris'.
